Abstract

This fact sheet discusses statistics for adult men who have survived sexual abuse during childhood, including research supporting the argument that most current estimates are underestimates. It also provides information about the increased risk of serious mental-health issues for these men. The statistics are drawn from 1998-2005, but cover an under-reported topic. The authors state that their goal for this fact sheet is to summarize a selection of important research “published by respected scientists, in reputable journals, after the work was reviewed and approved by scientific peers,” rather than provide a comprehensive list of all research studies available.
